The institution of Marriage has origins in Veda.
And though there is a historical way of finding out how old are the Veda in the form of written texts, the Veda as such are the code of creation, preservation and dissolution of the existence where the consciousness is the essential cause that could be attributed to all this manifestation.
There is a creation that is 'done' and there is a creation that 'happens'.
Life as such that emerges in an organism is the creation that happens, and though we can think we have arranged for it's happening, we ourselves as an organism are individually and collectively too such a creation only.
The idea of being and the idea of being oneself as a distinct person, -an individual are again what 'happens' to us. To each of us, though basically at individual level only.
We don't have a collective identity, though this has been made later on and is assumed as our 'being'. And whatever is made has a time-bound existence, including the 'time' itself.
Let us have a quick-glance at the vocabulary needed to understand this better :
--
ब्रह्म, brahma > Totality That includes the Creator, the Creation and the inherent knowledge which is not different from them both.
This trinity, this triad is so classified for the sake of simplicity in grasping the principle.
ब्राह्मण, brāhmaṇa > That which has its origin in ब्रह्म, brahma, though may be strictly in the subtle, gross or the intermediate form.
Thus the humans are but one kind of the multitude of forms (organisms).
Again, in humans there are few who by intuition or tradition, accept and follow the authority of Veda,
and practice the way accordingly as is enjoined upon by Veda.
Then there are others who have not such intuition, tradition or knowledge so for them there is no question of following this वेद-धर्म / Veda-dharma i.e. ब्राह्मण-धर्म, brāhmaṇa-dharma, again according to their inherent nature-born tendencies within them, that lets them see one of the four major kinds of the classification further made is most convenient for them.
This four-fold classification is called वर्ण / varṇa. are :
ब्राह्मण, brāhmaṇa, क्षत्रिय, kṣatriya, वैश्य, vaiśya and शूद्र, śūdra respectively.
As Veda proclaim, it is for the good and benefiting for all to live the life in harmony with one's natural tendencies, so there is no strife or conflict in thought and action, it is also important with a view for creating and preserving a cohesive society at the collective level.
Thus follows the 'profession' or the way of 'livelihood'.
And basically this is in the genes, along with the clan, the tradition also enhances the skill of any community, which is but an organ of the society at large.
At the formal level, one could have born in a family of one class, it is possible (and is seen as well) because of one's different inclinations and tendencies (as these vary from person to person) he is a better-fit in some other class.
And no class is superior or inferior, higher or lower, declare the scriptures.
But of course, there is emphasis of keeping the class as much 'pure' as possible.
We have a case Of Lord परशुराम / paraśurāma who was born of the ब्राह्मण-वर्ण / brāhmaṇa-varṇa, but had tendencies of क्षत्रिय-वर्ण, kṣatriya-varṇa.
Going into this here is quite out of subject and unimportant, but this shows, how the mixing-up of वर्ण / varṇa can disturb the cohesive-balance of harmony of the Society.
The first and the foremost consequence is that whole of सनातन-धर्म, sanātana-dharma, वर्णाश्रम-धर्म, varṇāśrama-dharma, and ब्राह्मण-धर्म, brāhmaṇa-dharma is lost, What happened after the Great war of महाभारत / mahābhārata.
Presently we can't say with confidence how far and to what extent the harm has been done.
--
The institution of Marriage as devised by Veda saw to it that purity of the वर्ण / varṇa is preserved at all cost. Because only then the ब्राह्मण-धर्म, brāhmaṇa-dharma could be able to perform the rituals according to the procedures strictly in compliance with the rules dictated by वेद-धर्म / Veda-dharma.
This was / is the fundamental of Marriage.
--
These days though the वेद-धर्म / Veda-dharma and ब्राह्मण-धर्म, brāhmaṇa-dharma are still alive and perhaps prospering too, the institution of Marriage has lost this fundamental understanding and no new understanding could evolve to replace the same.
Whatever be the idea of Marriage, Veda and all common-sense too suggest that Marriage is a social responsibility for every-one. Marriage is though gratification of sex-urge, this urge has implications that cause fragmentation in the society.
Religion of this day, whatever religion one practices enforces upon the followers to follow the ethics as is governed by their books. And the interpretations of the book itself varies so much that the disputes and differences are a common outcome.
At the level of society, how an individual deals with his / her own sex-urge has a great impact upon the society. Given that one can live 'in-relationship' and out of this Marriage-bracket, the question of the off-springs poses another problem.
Though companionship could be a good basis, but with every enjoyment and right the duty and responsibility is invariably associated. There is a 'price', one is expected to pay for, for whatever one gets in exchange from the society.
--
Marriage and Religion as tradition have become outdated, obsolete and redundant.
We have to create and sustain a new society where relationship is based upon the relation of the one who for living happily is dependent upon the other. And this is possible only if we have a right understanding of the sexual relationship as well. We can't afford suppressing or glamorizing the sex-urge and seek gratification but take it as a normal urge and force that is at the core of Life and Creation. This is a bit difficult to understand but an important, vital need of our times.
Marriage and Religion as tradition have conditioned our mind in such a way that sex and sexuality, sexual behavior have become a nightmare and a vicious cycle for most of us.
Society or individuals or The Society with individuals need to have a second glance over all this and find out.
