Potential of the Past :
--
What is known as the past is always :
Of a person; -the personal,
Of a society / civilization; -the collective.
Of the facts; -the events / the history.
--
The word 'Autopsy' could be viewed as a cognate of the Sanskrit word :
'आत्म-पश्य' ; that means :
looking into the body (self) of a living or a dead one.
Likewise, the word 'Biopsy' could be viewed as a cognate of the Sanskrit word :
'बीजीय-पश्य' or 'जीवीय-पश्य'
Both the words in Sanskrit mean :
looking into the source of a living object (creature or being, organ or organism).
All Past is but memory and the recognition of the memory.
The memory assumes equivalence of truth when brought into present by means of knowledge or thought.
Thus past whether the personal, the collective or the history is but contained in knowledge only.
All memory, recognition and thought is always a constantly changing movement that is focused in the moment / the time-span of a fraction of 'now'.
The truth that abides and stays as the support and substratum of all this happening has three perspectives namely the personal, the collective and the historical.
This truth could be realized only when it is perceived in all the three aspects as noted above, and that too at the same time, without dividing them into the three. Though for the right perception this may help to see the three aspects at three different levels as well, and afterwards we could again unify them.
--
At the personal level the memory, the knowledge, the recognition revolve around the sense of 'I' / 'me'. Thus the trio itself projects a sense of 'I' / 'me' in every individual organism. The whole life of this individual is seen vis-à-vis the world that is basically made of the same core elements it is itself (the physical body / the organism) is made of, yet seen as a different and distinct entity.
This memory, the knowledge, the recognition fades away as soon as the consciousness of the surrounding world is lost, as in sleep, absent-mindedness or in swoon or sleep.
It is noteworthy this 'I'-sense though goes dismal in that state of mind, it soon rejuvenates, becomes alive on waking up from the same.
This 'I'-sense has therefore no memory, the knowledge, the recognition or history to claim as its own, it survives as long (at least) as the organism is intact and alive. This is also trough because this 'I'-sense is in fact a result of the memory, the knowledge, the recognition of the individual only.
--
At the collective level, the infinitely many individual entities, living or non-living are classified in a group and there is again an infinity of such various groups, each of which assumes reality when thought of only. Humans and non-humans, sex, castes, tribes, civilizations, cultures, religions, faiths, traditions, rituals and customs are all parts and constituents of the collective memory; -that too only when thought about by an individual.
This collective memory is the potential latent that has no roots but the branches, buds, flowers and fruits only. Examining and investigating into its truth is like trying to find out the waters in a mirage.
Still there is a way it holds the path to find out the essential truth or the Reality that holds this whole bouquet in its invisible hands.
In a way we can dissect this potential memory either as a biopsy or an autopsy is done.
-- /
The third and the last perspective / aspect is the 'history' which is so full of ambiguity and ridden with doubt, it could never undergo an autopsy or a biopsy.
