Secularism
--
The first-ever use of the word 'Secular' is referred to in the history of the Church with a section of the society that had a different and perhaps opposite view about Religion.
This could be from the word 'Sect', however the word could have come from the Sanskrit equivalent शास्त / shAsta, which could have generated the word 'Caste' as well.
Secant is yet another word that means 'one that dissects, cuts into two or more parts.
This is often used as an abbreviation 'Sec' in Trigonometry.
Whatever be the case, we could premise that there are several Sanskrit verb-roots (धातु) of some similar words. Let us first take a glance over them :
शस्त (प्रशस्त, शस्त्र ) from the verb-root 'शस्'
'शक्त' - one having power or strength.
शास्त (शासन, शासित, अनुशासन, शास्त्र), from the verb-root 'शास्'
which means 'to control', 'to govern', 'to teach'.
'शास्ता' means the one who propounds / lays foundation of शास्त्र / scripture, specifically the sacred and the Holy-one.
शिष्य - from the verb-root 'शिष्'.
शेष - from the verb-root 'शिष्'.
शास् takes the form of 'शिक्ष' and 'शैक्ष' which convey the idea of controlling, regulating, governing and teaching.
The verb-root 'शिष्' again is found in the words शिशु (शिष् - उ) and शिश्नः (शिष् - 'क्त' प्रत्यय); which mean infant child and the sex-organ respectively as well.
We can thus see how the words 'Secular', 'Secularism' and 'Sex' might have come into vogue and in the vernacular.

The above treatment came to mind while writing in the previous post in this blog, about the possible origin of the 'Anglo-Saxon'.
