So What?

--

Yogasutra 1:39

*****************

In the last post the significance of ego was dealt with.

While referring to that aphorism, a next namely :

Going through the next lines,  came upon this :

Like a Rishi in the Sanatana Vedika tradition, Maharshi Patanjali never imposes an idea, He only puts forward a view which may help the aspirant according to his earnestness, sincerity disposition and keen enthusiasm.

Maharshi Patanjali does not explain or surmise if there is or isn't a God or a Supreme Authority that might creativity,  maintain and dissolve this manifest existence.

He leaves the notion of God upon the inclination, orientation and assumption he might have got through his upbringing and surrounding.

यथाभिमत means whatever and how-so-ever one thinks of the God, when one contemplates of such a God, one may come upon Him, the God  accordingly, and attain samAdhi (enraptured state of mind).

This is a very secular approach in terms of the meaning of the word.

'secular', in contrast and comparison to 'spiritual', means the mundane.

The conflict between the Abrahamic and the Vedika Sanatana Dharma lies in the fact that at a stage in the spiritual evolution of man, one may think of the Lord as a different and superior entity while assuming oneself as only a slave, or an instrument in His hands.

In the state of perfect enrapture however, the aspirant may come to a realization that the Lord (God) is the only Reality.

He (the aspirant) can then accommodate his understanding (of whatever he might have realized) in words and express the same in his own language.

Maharshi suggests to the disciple (who follows the discipline of yoga), having attained such a state (samAdhi) one could ultimately surrender to the Lord and therefrom his own separate ego  is no more.

In this acceptance of the Lord as the only Truth, the ego is just extinct.

(The Ego)

How to annihilate the ego?
--
The very concept of ego is alien / foreign to the Abrahmic religions, while in psychology, it refers to the psyche, the individual consciousness, and the personal identity.
However in Veda, Vedanta and the related texts, it is defined very clearly, and the removal of ego is equated with the liberation, enlightenment and dissolution of ignorance. The annihilation of ego in the Buddhist texts is 'nirvana'.
We can see the same 'nirvana' finds place in Gita also and is referred to as 'Brahma-nirvana'.
We may also note that historically the birth of  Buddha was much later than Krishna, and the war of MAHABHARATA, where-in is the Gita narrated.
Tirthankar Bhagavan Mahavira is contemporary of Buddha and while in the Jain-texts, the self (Atman) is immortal reality, the Atman, which is attainment of Moksh of the self.
Jain however insist that every individual has to work for one's own Moksh / liberation, attain the (state of) Atman, which is freedom eternal from  the cycle of repeated births and deaths.
Whatever be the different rationales, the three religions of the East agree that the ego is the only obstacle in the way to realization.
If the ego is / has a hypothetical existence only,  a notion only, how it becomes such a formidable obstacle to Realization or the Supreme wisdom, (which is just another name of this enlighten-ment, and is not a state of the individual mind), and here arises a legitimate question :
Exactly "who" is caught in the trap of this ego?
Is the individual, -the 'self' is yet another entity which is being neither the ego nor the Atman?
Let us see what is ego.
Ego is a confederation of the four functions of the mind, and this mind is not one or many but a quality of consciousness only, not to be viewed in terms of one or many. We can liken this with the example of water which is kept in different vessels. As such water couldn't be said to be as one or many. As water it is the same, though appears in many vessels.
Exactly so, the mind that is consciousness only, when is thought of being associated with a living being (say a human), appears to be the individual mind.
Again this individual mind comprises of the four major traits, and could be named / enumerated according to their respective roles as under:
1.The (sense of) doer-ship, the assumption 'I do' or 'I don't do', associated with the idea that I am an independent entity  --thus associating oneself with, and defining oneself in terms of ego.
2.The (sense of) enjoyment, the assumption 'I experience' -- variously different kinds of many  pleasures and pains.
3.The (sense of) ownership, the assumption 'I am the owner of so many things'
--either of the material kind, or in the form of abstract notion.
So I possess these things in this way.
No doubt this is only a thought and not a reality that could be verified physically.
Like saying :
"I am the owner of this house, car or money, land, property, ..."
This is really and solely supported by and depends on conventions only.
4.The (sense of) knowledge --
"I know this and that"
All this knowledge is but stored in the memory, and the memory itself keeps removing part of the old, and adding on new knowledge, moment to moment.
These four are the very foundational blocks or the pillars upon which this building, the edifice, the ego, stands proudly.
As such, really there is no such an entity which may exist as ego. Understanding this whole network of thought results in the realization  at once, that this assumed ego is but a false notion acquired in the mind because of in-attention.
The 'attention' on the other hand, is verily the consciousness itself and conversely the consciousness itself is attention.
The two can't exist apart from one-another.
Awakening to this fact is the only clue to end this trap, "in-attention".
This is how this conceptual ego is eradicated.
***

Thought, Relation-ship,

and Conscious-ness.

--------------------©------------------

I have deliberately and intentionally put a hyphen between the words :

Relation and ship,

and between the words :

Conscious and ness.

This is because the two aspects of the word :

'relation',

and the two aspects of the word :

'Conscious'.

Normally 'thought' is the only connecting link that relates a conscious being with any thing, that one comes across.

This objective reality that is connected to the mind is the very thing one thinks of.

But the point is :

What is thought in relation to the mind / consciousness ?

How one when associated with thought,  assumes oneself in terms of a 'thinker'?

Isn't this assumption 'I think' again a thought only?

Exactly "Who" is there that says :

"I think",

Is it not the underlying consciousness where-in thought arises / appears and soon disappeared too? But does this consciousness utters a single word?

Is this consciousness the very 'thinker', that is, because of the inherent in-attention only, given an assumed reality and is taken to be real one,  independent of, and a separate entity existing apart from the consciousness?

This may need not be stressed that conscious-ness as the word suggests, is the awareness, (of) being only. Consciousness is thus only the light where-in thought plays its role and is seen / known in this very consciousness only, but in fact, there is no such an entity that voluntarily performs this role.

So this 'thinker' is again an idea, a thought only. Once this is understood, there could not be any  relation whatsoever between the activity of thought and the assumed entity that appears and disappeares and is given reality because of in-attention of this whole movement of thought  within the field of consciousness.

Once the thought is revealed / realized in terms of an activity, a happening, the assumed 'thinker' is no more.

The Spiritual and The Religious.

The Spirituality and the Religion.

Spoke in the Wheel.

To one, To all!

-----------©----------

Hindu Religion is, fundamentally very different from the 3 Abrahamic Religions in that, there are many a versions of Hindu religion, most of them mingle up easily into one another, and none of them is strictly against the rest. Conspicuously, and in contrast, the 3 Abrahamic Religions differ greatly with one another in their faiths, tenets, philosophies, beliefs, doctrines and traditions at the very core, and in comparison so therefore, Hindu Religion is always very different from them. Again, Hindu Religion is, very  accommodating for all those who follow and practice the same. May be, they follow various different lifestyles and have diverse philosophical approach towards the Religion, still any of them could easily merge into another according to the bent and inclination of the mind of the individual.

But the trouble starts, when any of those sects insists that it's the only truth and the only way to God-Realization, liberation, the afterlife, or what  one would like to call it.

Sanatana Dharma as such, has always  been inclusive (समावेशी) in that, it lets everyone to follow his own  स्वधर्म, -way of attainment of the Supreme Truth, God or Reality. And not only to follow,  but also to discover in one's own way, what is स्वधर्म,  the Ultimate Truth, God or even No God, Reality, whatsoever...

In other words, what we call 'the spiritual'.

This has nothing to do with the concept of monotheism or polytheism .

Sanatana Dharma,  Maintains that the God or the Core-Reality of Existence (Divine) could never be classified in terms of One or many.

This is how the concepts of politheism, mono-theism and atheism have come into being.

So a man initiated in (for example : the Arya Samaj, or the ISKCON) is always in trouble and puts others in difficulty as well, when comes across the one who has been initiated into, and follows some another sect.

This is the very cause why the communication becomes just impossible.

There may be big differences in terms of the philosophical interpretations of the scriptures, but that never implies that the Core-Reality as is pointed out in the scriptures differs in any way.

But the various versions of these sects within the framework of Hindu Religion do have clash and conflict of interests, which leads to confrontation between the many such organizations.

So when it comes to dialogue, there is always kind of haughtiness, stubbornness, obstinacy and one, because of his conditioning forces his opinion upon the other.

Though both may adore the scripture (say Gita,  -for example) they have their own understanding of the same and their interpretations differ so much that there is no real conversation, let the dialogue aside.

Because I have myself come across such a predicament, I am trying to convey this here.

--------©-------

So What?

So What?

The Recluse.

ASCETICS OR ASCETICISM

Looks synonymous with RECLUSE.

RECLUSE however is cognate (सजाति / सज्ञात) of the Sanskrit word परिश्लिष् / परिक्लिश् pointing out a RECLUSE is one who keeps striving for or keeping away from the society, while the word ASCETIC is a cognate (सज्ञात / सजाति) of the Sanskrit word अव-शयति meaning asleep or just has no relation whatsoever with the society or the mundane.

This is like the word NEGOTIATE which is the cognate (सज्ञात / सजाति), even a direct derivative of the Sanskrit word निगच्छति meaning to deal with so as to gain / attain some desired benefit. This way, an ASCETIC is one, who practices or has attained the purpose ultimate.

Another equivalent word for the RECLUSE or the ASCETIC in Sanskrit is संन्यस्त / संन्यासी which in English becomes vest / invest or dispose off rightly everything that belongs to the world. No doubt, this means a  संन्यासी / MENDICANT is one who has no interest whatsoever in the affairs if the world. Again, this includes his body as well, because he has realized that he is not the body which is but a composition of the 5 gross elements viz., the Earth, the Ether, the Fire, the Water, and the Air only.

It is the consciousness associated with this whole organism that makes it sentient and the vital breath (प्राण) that starts the biological clock in the heart.

The vital breath (प्राण) and the consciousness both are the subtle elements that imbue the organism with life. This life is again but the Life, the REALITY, which is all and everything.

The same Life, vital breath and consciousness together cause a false sense of the individuality that soon owing to intellect (and memory associated and generated hey the intellect takes the form of ego, or the person / personal sense of existence.

An aspiring ASCETIC is thus one who practices to become ADEPT (अर्हत्) though has so far not broken the shackles of ignorance, because his sense of having a separate existence different and other than ATMAN / BRAHMAN (आत्मा,  परमात्मा, ब्रह्मन्) is intact.

A Mendicant may be an aspiring ASCETIC or one who has carefully cast aside the world and the mundane concerns and has given his whole attention to the need of attainment of the REAL that is the ultimate meaning and purpose (श्रेयस्) of Life.

This is how the four pursuits (पुरुषार्थ) of life have been pointed out in scriptures.

AN ASCETIC may or may not have gone through scriptures, yet the GURU in him is watching him from the times immemorial and keeps pushing him towards this goal supreme.

This is how ASCETICISM prevails from the ancient times and though not necessarily kind of a religion, governs the spiritual life of all and everyone.

That is one having washed of impurities if mind and soul, though may not of the body, just because body itself is treated an impurity which is truly a bundle of filth and dirt only. Though could he cleaned repeatedly, in the end it has to he discarded.

The word also hints at another Sanskrit word अवधान meaning ATTENTION (ध्यान) which is but a ray of AWARENESS (चित् / चैतन्य).

Thus attention is always about a living entity,  while AWARENESS is the very Life itself.

A Cause for Asceticism.

The Only Challenge.

--

Just now wrote a post about this in my another blog in blogger.

This was about the only challenge, the world and the humanity as a whole have to face, if they have to survive.

We all could see that

THE ONLY CHALLENGE

before us is :

How to restore the natural population-balance of humans vis-a-vis all the other species our planet has.

Our so-called progress in any field let's not us see that this progress depends on the cruel  destruction of nature and natural resources that could never be compensated and ultimately would lead to the extinction of the our whole civilization. Unless we see this clearly at the individual and the collective level also, we are doomed to become history.

The many attempts to restore this balance are though made by many organizations at various levels, by the politicians, as well as by the organized religions also.

And though may perhaps help in some way to a group or people, but in the overall impact, this is not going in any way to restore this balance of human population in comparison and contrast to all other species and creatures.

On the other hand, wars and diseases keep emerging because of our collective human folly and stupidity, which we are hardly aware of.

In any case, one who is prudent, watchfull of this whole phenomenon may at once realize that unless one turns to asceticism, there is no way to address this collective human challenge.

The means of birth-control and forcing the same over the population at large is itself an irrelevant and impractical option.

ASCETICISM  is no religion but irrespective of whatever religion one has, whatever faith one follows, one can sure see in ASCETICISM his own good and the good for all and even the life and world as a whole also.

This is the only INTELLIGENCE we need, if we would and have to survive.

ASCETICUSM involves various and many a spiritual disciplines, and one practicing Asceticism would always be a rightful religious one, though maybe not strictly one, who follows traditional aspects of any of the religions in vogue.
