Meaning :
Because appearing as if covered by माया / māyā (ignorance associated जीव / jīva, and not with the Self / Him),
He (who) having withdrawn the senses inwards, appears thus just as जीव / jīva,
In the way as Afflicted by Rahu (node), the Sun and Moon appear having gobbled-up by the dragon.
But as soon as the जीव / jīva wakes up from the sleep and yet at the moment, when the senses have not yet started to work, in that brief moment One who exhorts the जीव / jīva and reveals His True Being,
Obeisances to Him The Great Teacher श्रीदक्षिणामूर्ति śrīdakṣiṇāmūrti.

The Restless Mind.

The Restless Mind
--
When the mind is restless it seeks some occupation. And while engaged in some activity or occupation, just forgets it was and is restless. Occupation or getting busy in some activity does not clear away the restlessness of the mind, but only for the time being it is concealed from the sight. As long as ‘why there is restlessness?’ it is not understood well, it stays. But even more difficult and rather more important,  more serious question is : Exactly ‘Who’ is restless? The restless mind can’t grasp the seriousness of this question. Only in a peaceful mind this question assumes the form of a challenge. Though every-one can give a verbal answer to this question but there is no such an answer. Of course there IS the existential answer or rather of asking this question, where it becomes a deep, intense urge inside. All verbal or intellectual answers come out only from the memory, while ‘Who’ is the existence devoid of memory. If there is no physical need like hunger, thirst, pain, sickness or tiredness (which need to be addressed and are fulfilled also), what makes the mind restless? Why the mind feels satisfied by getting involved in some activity born of ‘thought’? But if the mind has an intense and deep urge and keen interest in finding out one’s reality, it could perhaps know: ‘what it was while one was asleep!’
Then one would muse over : Is it now, in this moment, any different from, -what it was during the time when one was asleep? One would perhaps see the thought of restlessness itself is the only restlessness while one is awake. ‘Thought’ is an event, purely a natural happening only. During sleep, the mind was withdrawn from all external objects and almost a vacuity only, but at the same time, this vacuity was not a vacuum, but was in the form of the witness of that vacuum. When awake, the same vacuum turns into thought and the witness of the objects (and senses).
In conclusion, this witnessing-consciousness is never an object that could ever be recognizable (through senses); - which is never affected by neither the sleep nor by the waking states of the mind.
The only question is :
Could one, the mind, perhaps be as unattached and unconnected to the objects, (experiences and the senses as well), during waking state as it is naturally and spontaneously while one is in deep sleep?
If this happens, then one could perhaps find answer to the question :
“Exactly, ‘Who’ is restless?”

Inevitability

The Wisdom of Krishna and The Reality of War.
--
The Tibetan Spiritual Leader Dalai Lama describes the Reality of war.
Don't we know already? Don't we have that much common-sense?
The war is constantly ongoing a process in life at the individual and the collective level.
At the very level of existence where the survival of the form is challenged every moment.
From the tiny insect to the societies, cultures, civilizations.
So is it wise to condemn, denounce the war?
When a stupid fails to think on his own cruelties, the violence, the formidable destruction of not only of the great values, but of the life itself as well and not only the human beings but in many forms, you just can't preach him. He is blinded by the fear, passion, rage, authority, be it a book, or the people in authoritative position he depends upon for his life and survival. And not to mention of course, of his pleasures which have already destroyed the minds of all of us since the tradition of following blindly some-one or something has began.
So war is in our blood and keeps inviting blood, unless we cleanse and purify our blood.
War is a great folly and foolhardy too, yet without understanding why war is in our blood condemning denouncing the war is far more a greater one.
A man of sane mind can see the utter meaningless and the destruction the war brings.
We kill our own brethren not only those who we think are our enemy, but also those who we think are our relatives, friends, loved-ones our own blood.
Arjun too was possessed by this pity and asked to Krishna :
"Is it not sheer mindlessness, stupidity to kill our brethren for capturing and enjoying the pleasures of power, wealth and land? When they are not with us what use we have of these things? Is it not better to live one's life by means of alms or like the mendicants who feed on the wild plant-roots, leaf, fruits and such things?"
To this, Krishna suggested :
"Arjun! You are a born kshatriya and your very nature would not let you follow this whim of your mind. Those mendicants, Muni who live in the forests have a goal of attaining the Supreme Truth, to know what the ultimate meaning and essence of the life. They are ready to pay the price to fulfill their urge for this. They have the ripened understanding that the world can give you the food, cloth and shelter but for this too you need to pay the price. And you have to fritter away your peace of mind in this effort to maintain the life with all those luxuries which have no limit. And seeing the utter meaninglessness of war you are resigned to all this and accepted to embrace the life of an ascetic in order to find the deeper meaning of life as a whole. So they are convinced that the world and its joys and pleasures have no intrinsic value or meaning and only hinder the search for Truth.
Arjun ! On the other hand Arjun! you are thinking of escaping from this inevitable eventuality of war, the destiny has brought for you only because of aversion to war and its consequences.
There is a contrast poles apart.
You are walking into a vacuum while those ascetics after having well understood the hollowness, the emptiness and the absurdity of the apparent world and its pleasures and pains, saw there is no other way for a wise to find out the greater and the Ultimate Truth that is but self or Self, for everyone is spontaneously aware of one's self, though may not see the significance easily. To find out the meaning and significance of this 'self' or 'Self' one needs to have urge and has attained the maturity of mind which creates in him this urge and interest. This is not wandering in dark but is a sustained effort and exercise that could be taken up while one is young in spirit.
Only a wise with all his best efforts will try to avoid the war in the first instance, but when you are forcefully drawn into a war, you have to fight for and against this or that side. Kill and / or get killed. War is the inevitability destiny has forced upon you. And condemning war or running away from war benefits in no way."
Apathy to the sorrow of the mankind only adds to it and aggravates the situation even more.
This is not Compassion which is / was directed to men of ascetic-mind.

Impulse, compulsion and Destiny.

Impulse, compulsion and Destiny.
--
A thought for to-day.
--
Whatever thought comes to the mind of man, prompted by the thought whatever he believes he thinks of doing, whatever is actually 'done' through him, and whatever really 'happens' are actually quite very different things from one-another.
The 'world' where he lives in, and the 'world' where-in he believes he lives, are similarly entirely two different worlds.
Is it not surprising that assuming the world to be stable, -even permanent, knowingly or unknowingly, compelled by destiny, one has to do whatever is his lot?

The Option /

The Option
--
Like a salt-doll,
Live the life,
In the sea that is the world,
And get dissolved and lost,
Or,
In the sea that is the awareness of the Self,
And get born in the Life eternal.

Creativity, Death and Destiny /

Creativity, Death and Destiny /
--
Creativity is there in every-one, but only when it finds no route to express itself , when it is thwarted, opts for the alternative ways for the same. This is often looked upon by others as 'mental illness'. It is not only depression anxiety or the sense of failure, frustration or absurdity that drives one to think of committing suicide, but may also be a natural way of intelligence when one is not afraid of death because one is convinced that 'Life' means infinitely much more than this physical body which keeps one tethered and restricted to into a cage named 'the person'. End of this body is an inevitable consequence, and it is just irrelevant how this end takes place.
The destiny that has brought this body into existence and 'Life', itself has to decide the way and the time when this organism has to come to its end.
--
Creativity, Death and Destiny /

Chaos

The Spiritual / अध्यात्म / adhyātma

The Spiritual
--
The following is the English translation of my Hindi post.
rendered for those who would like to see the English version and though the essential is almost same as the original, there are minor changes made while editing.
--
The word ‘Spiritual’ is the English equivalent of the संस्कृत / saṃskṛta root
. which is also the root of spirit, spiritual, inspiration, respiration, desperate , aspire, conspiracy, spur, …
The verb-root means the arising of consciousness in a living being.
This consciousness which manifests in a material body has the inherent quality of attention essentially associated with it. If there is attention there is this consciousness. Conversely, if there is consciousness there is attention.
This quality of attention which is the essence and expression of consciousness is basically the consciousness or awareness of being which further qualifies as the consciousness of oneself and the other. The material body gets preference over the rest and is referred to as oneself or me, while the rest is referred to as the other. Though this is not a verbal process, it could be described in these words. In this beginning the duality was not there though was came to exist when the consciousness was thus apparently split into me and the other.
The consciousness associated with me became me, while the consciousness associated with the rest became the secondary the other.
The spirit that is the essence and a matter of fact, became the manifest consciousness and the material body that is distinguished from the other was accepted as me, while the rest as the not-me.
In meaning, the संस्कृत > saṃskṛta word अधि-आत्म / adhi-ātma / अध्यात्म / adhyātma word is equivalent to this ‘spirit’, which means the spirit that every living being is imbued with without exception thus qualifies as me in that particular body which one, -the individual calls one’s own. This is always doubtful if there is such a similar consciousness associated with the totality that one refers to as ‘the other’. At the same time, as one intuitively accepts oneself as an individual, one can’t deny the other living beings different from him, and doubt their individual consciousness that makes each and every-one a unique, while the totality remains as the perceived world.
In the individual the person again has a life which he lives at three levels and at all the tree levels the consciousness, the spirit remains intact and uninterrupted through whole the time.
Living the life so, the person or the individual who experiences, enjoys and suffers the objective world by means of the objects in the world so remembers his experiences which together form a memory. This memory helps him to understand what is pleasing and what is unpleasing to him. What is pleasant is remembered as enjoyment and pleasure, while what is remembered as pain and grief is remembered as suffering. This memory again prompts him to engage in action, because action is the only means available through which he can have more and more pleasure and the suffering –the least.
These two propensities, the modes of behavior are thus ingrained in him as habit.
The first of experiencing of enjoying the pleasant and avoiding the painful and the second of engaging in the action that would possibly help him in having all the pleasures he wants, while avoiding all the sufferings he fears of.
As long as one lives on one has these two core-tendencies which are common to man as well all other living creatures as well.
We are not sure if animals and other living beings have this faculty of thinking in a verbal mode that we humans have. So we humans can by our very habit itself, imagine of a future, imminent or distant one, while we don’t know how and if other creatures also have this tendency.
Here we are at present not concerned about that. Here we are studying about the man’s nature and behavior.
These two core-tendencies which one is governed by through-out the life keep going on all the time till one is alive. And gradually by the time when the organism is decayed one is dead.
Imagination of future and the memory of the past create the illusion of having one’s existence after death also. This illusion itself took place when one was alive. This lets us understand the fact that having one’s existence as an individual and a distinct and separate entity and others too having such an individual and a distinct and separate entity of their own is basically an error of judgment on the part of our thinking. But somehow it has become such a strong idea, even a belief one can never question or doubt its validity through reasoning.
While living the life one is so much busy with enjoying the pleasures and avoiding the pains / sufferings and trying all the time for achieving more and more means to fulfill his desires and cravings, running away from the possible pains that life inevitably keeps inflicts upon us one gets habituated to this. One thinks of the disease, the old age, life after death, heaven and hell, ‘karma’ and ‘destiny’, ‘Salvation’, re-incarnation and freedom from the cycle of births and rebirths and other such things, but hardly looks at this physical body that is perceived in the consciousness which is made of the elements, is a result only of the action of the parents. The result is a consequence only which has a destiny and no question of free-will or independent action arises for this organism which is going through this happening which one calls his ‘life’. In the formation of this physical body, all the future was destined as if programmed.
These two core-tendencies however cause in some a concern of these various hypothetical ideas, and then in some the quest and the intense urge for the spiritual arises, while others find no such an urge or even interest. This too could be the consequence. And though those who seek the answers to their urge are eager, this urge is kind of a dream only. Yet the sorrow when experienced in dream doesn’t become unreal and in order to get of this imaginary or unreal plight, one has to wake up.
This tendency is yet another aspect of the spiritual. The search for the spiritual aims at finding out this realization.
The formal classification of these three core-tendencies could be made as:
भोगवाद / bhogavāda, कर्मवाद / karmavāda , and  त्यागवाद / tyāgavāda  respectively.
भोगवाद / bhogavāda is the tendency to enjoy / experience the pleasures while avoiding the painful.
कर्मवाद / karmavāda is the tendency to engage in action for the sake of enjoyment of the pleasures while avoiding the painful.
त्यागवाद / tyāgavāda  is the tendency to be detached to all objects of pleasures and pain and understand their limited importance and usefulness in life.
Vedanta is one approach while Buddhism is another and though there are some difference in their opinions about the existence and the form of ‘God’, both agree that annihilation of ego is the only right awakening.

--
Recognition, evidence and authenticity.
--
The only self-evident truth is :
No recognition could be the ultimate and authentic evidence, and no evidence could be ultimate and authentic recognition / proof.
This is always true in reference to 'I' and the world also.
Just as critical knowledge could not be the ultimate and the absolute knowledge, the ultimate and the absolute knowledge could never be the critical.
This is the essence of all knowledge.
