Please read this article and give your feedback on verses quoted here from various scriptures of India for approval of meat-eating. There is lot of debate going on whether these verses are correctly translated or not.

My Reply to the above :

This whole article seems to have been written by and commented upon by अनधिकारी anadhikAree, may be a learned scholar like so many are these days. The words 'During Vedika Period' and the mention of स्मृति smriti, संहिता and धर्मसूत्र dharmasutra elaborates my point.
The first error is done while presenting veda as 'books'. Veda is अपौरुषेय  / apaurusheya वाक् / vak that is 'seen' by / revealed to one who is duly qualified to understand / grasp the same. And veda speak of truth for all times. veda, even in written form are the guide-lines only for those who belong to one of the 4 classes and stages of life. In other words, follow the spirit of वर्णाश्रम . Even if Rishis may have consumed meat and wine, even the kings have sacrificed animals in yajna that is perfectly fitting with the instructions of veda. And veda include many instructions which are contradictory or coherent according to the one who belongs to  वर्णाश्रम धर्म . The most of veda constitutes teachings in the form of 'do-s' and 'do not'. While these are meant for those who can't grasp सांख्य, there are वेदान्त / उपनिषत् part that speak from the stand-point of
'सांख्य-निष्ठा ' 'sAnkhya-niShThA '.

अध्याय 3, श्लोक 3,

श्रीभगवान् उवाच :

लोकेऽस्मिन्द्विविधा निष्ठा पुरा प्रोक्ता मयानघ ।
ज्ञानयोगेन साङ्ख्यानां कर्मयोगेन योगिनाम् ॥

(लोके-अस्मिन् द्विविधा निष्ठा पुरा प्रोक्ता मया अनघ ।
ज्ञानयोगेन साङ्ख्यानाम् कर्मयोगेन योगिनाम् ॥)

भावार्थ :
हे अनघ अर्जुन! इस लोक में (अधिकारी-भेद के अनुसार भिन्न-भिन्न मनुष्यों में) जो दो निष्ठाएँ  (परमार्थ की सिद्धि / प्राप्ति कैसे होती है, इस विषय में) होती हैं, उनके बारे नें मेरे द्वारा बहुत पहले ही कहा जा चुका है । साङ्ख्ययोग के प्रति ज्ञानयोगियों की निष्ठा, और कर्मयोग के प्रति कर्मयोगियों की निष्ठा ।

Chapter 3, shloka 3,

śrībhagavān uvāca :

loke:'smindvividhā niṣṭhā
purā proktā mayānagha |
jñānayogena sāṅkhyānāṃ
karmayogena yoginām ||

(loke-asmin dvividhā niṣṭhā
purā proktā mayā anagha |
jñānayogena sāṅkhyānām
karmayogena yoginām ||)

Meaning :

Lord śrīkṛṣṇa said :

O sinless arjuna of pure mind! Long ago in times, there are two different kinds of ways to follow for approaching the Supreme which were described by ME (for those who deserve, according to the specific bent of their mind). Those who are inclined to follow the way of sāṅkhya-yoga (by deduction and enquiry into the nature of Reality, Self) are the jñāna-yogins. Others, who emphasize and are inclined to follow the way of action are the karma-yogins.
This may help us to see how scholars too can't grasp the spirit of veda and are bound to mis-interpret.
According to ज्ञान-निष्ठा, be a jnAnI or ignorant,man is forced to act as is prompted by त्रिगुणात्मिका प्रकृति and no one escape it.
For a jnAnI, there is no contadiction if he is served beef or fruits but for the ignorant who don't understand this ज्ञान-निष्ठा this causes a 'karma' sin or virtue 'pApa' or 'puNya' and adds to destiny.
And veda never instruct do this or that, do not do this or that. veda just point out what karma would yield what result.Veda leaves choosing the option to you. And again. Veda is in Sanskrit only, could not be even written down or pronounced, though heard in a pure heart by अधिकारी adhikAree,
I see this whole article just a useless exercise only.
