--

How to transport the memory.

How to transport the memory...
FROM ONE LIFE TO ANOTHER.
--
Transport or Transplant?
The last post dealing with "ब्रह्माकार वृत्ति" / "brahmakara Vritti" was somehow strayed away from the purpose in two ways:
First and less important was the question :
Is it possible to transport the memory from one living being to another living being?
Then again;
Is it possible to transport / transplant the memory from a dead person / creature to another living creature?
We can also try to see if it is possible to transplant the memory of a dying / dead man into another living body; - in its embryo-state?
Presently, this may look a bit overstretching the imagination.
Second and more important was the question:
How to distinguish between the "liberation" that is supposed to be attained by one who has established in "I am" only (and not in "I", though may have had a glimpse of "I" occasionally) and another one who has gone beyond "I am" and is abiding in "I"?
Going by the scriptures of Vedanta (including Yoga and Tantra as well, though this whole is Veda only) there are two different approaches one is open to all who through spiritual efforts come up to
"ब्रह्माकार वृत्ति" / "brahmakara Vritti" and finally attain "Knowledge-Supreme" of "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman", and still retain the memory "I am" with it.
They truly realize the essence of the dictum :
"सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म" / This all (manifestation / phenomenal) is verily "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" only, yet they just fail to see another hidden truth :
"ब्रह्मविद् ब्रह्मैव भवति " / The one who 'knows' "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" is again "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" only, for the distinction of the "known" and the one who "knows" completely ceases for good.
Again this state, where this distinction is no more could be expressed in the words :
"Observer is the observed"
This is an interesting fact that one who has realized this state may have attained the same either through elaborate "spiritual practice" voluntarily or just because of sheer earnestness and quest for the "Truth" / "The Reality"...
The process that is through proper discipline of the system of Vedanta leads one to  "ब्रह्माकार वृत्ति" / "brahmakara Vritti" and then if the seeker dies before understanding that :
"ब्रह्मविद् ब्रह्मैव भवति " / The one who 'knows' "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" is again "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" ; and "I" is "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman", while "I am" is the consciousness of "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman", which gets mixed up with some objects and forms the foundation for all subsequent memory, and 'one' begins to identify "I am" with whatever is perceived in this consciousness.
The stage when this happens, one is mature enough that one could bring the attention (चित्त) at the
"ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" through practicing 1. निदिध्यासन... that is; 1.through constant deliberation of the truth, -what is temporary / transient and what is not,  2. contemplating upon the conclusion of  1.चिंतन / deliberation that "I am" is the only ever-present fact, though still not clear what it means, 3. Trying to stay in "I am" in whatever way one can and by and by immersing deep and coming across the light where-in "I am" rises and dissolves into again and again.
With 'attention', the mind follows the object of attention (though it is not an outward one) and this flow of mind towards this object "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" facilitates the movement of प्राण / vital life-force, which is called "ब्रह्म-नाडी" /  "brahma-nāḍī " in the Vedanta.
This is not the same as " ज्ञान नाडी  / jñāna nāḍī " which starts functioning when one follows the course of  "Spiritual Quest" prompted by sheer urge and seriousness.
This is how the 'Liberation' in scriptures has been described in two ways.
But let us see :
what is  "ब्रह्म-नाडी" /  "brahma-nāḍī "
The place of memory (as has been narrated in the earlier posts) is आज्ञा-चक्र / ājñā-cakra, or the point between the eye-brows. The same is also the place of वृत्ति / vṛtti (mental modes).
Usually the वृत्ति / vṛtti is associated with the external objects of senses, and so "I am" is in abeyance, even never noticed.
But when through practicing
निदिध्यासन... that is; 1.through constant deliberation of the truth, -what is temporary / transient and what is not,  2. contemplating upon the conclusion of  1.चिंतन / deliberation that "I am" is the only ever-present fact, though still not clear what it means, 3. Trying to stay in "I am" in whatever way one can and by and by immersing deep and coming across the light where-in "I am" rises and dissolves into again and again...
the flow of mental-mode is withdrawn from the external objects, namely associated with memory of the past and the imagination of future, (because memory takes the past as Real, and this further strengthens memory) and attention is thus fixed in "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" and the वृत्ति / vṛtti then becomes "ब्रह्माकार वृत्ति" / "brahmakara Vritti" ...
Such an evolved soul at the time of death has to utter the sacred word " ॐ " / "Aum ", keeping attention (sight) fixed at the point between the eye-brows, restricting the senses from going outwards (such as sight etc.)
The sight follows the attention, while प्राण /  prāṇa (vital forces) follow the sight.
This way one gets merged in "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" and is born in ब्रह्म-लोक /  brahma-loka , -the sphere of those who are ब्रह्मविद् / brahmavid ...
This is all in line with the truth of Vedanta, while there is yet another truth maintained in Vedanta, that at the time of death, the  प्राण /  prāṇa (vital forces) of a ब्रह्मविद् / brahmavid exit not through any नाडी" / nāḍī (nerve) that takes him away from the body.
Instead in his case, the प्राण /  prāṇa (vital forces) enter the Heart and merge there only :
Again, in case of a  जीवन्मुक्त / jīvanmukta, one liberated while alive, His mind is perfectly the "ब्रह्मन्" / "Brahman" "I" only and quite untouched with "I am", and though He looks like other ordinary man, He is in the Supreme.
--
Now, what happens in the case of one who believes he is born, is living this life and has a name and personality in such and such a world?
As the ignorance of "I" keeps him firmly attached to "I am" this thought keeps his memory in a seed-form and at the time of his death this seed leaves the body and waits for another body (in the womb) where it is reborn.
We had seen how this word भ्रू / Brow is associated with भ्रूण / embryo as well.
If some-day modern science could decode the memory of a man, may be it could also know how to transplant the memory of one living man to some other man (though it is a bit tough question).

Breaking out of the memory.

The memory-trap and the breaking out of this trap.
--
In the last two posts it was pointed out how 'I' is the 'सत्' / " What IS ", while "I am" the memory manifest in the individual and the aggregate collective or "Totality".
Thus, "I" appears to have been divided into two mutually independent and separate entities one is the individual while the world is another one.
The "I am" manifest in the individual becomes the "personal", the individual consciousness while the 'world' is perceived as a counterpart to this "person".
This is plain truth that the physical body and the world both are made of the same fundamental elements and thus the physical body is only an infinitesimally small part of the infinitesimally vast and bigger entity, -'the world'.
The "I am" in man that is the memory of one's existence as "I" thus gets restricted and confined within the physical body and all things in its contact.
This "I am" thus repeatedly defined and cast into a form and shape at many levels, all basically taking the body as the point of reference.
This division of "I" in terms of a person and his world is therefore is but a baseless assertion that takes place in consciousness (sense of "I am") associated with the body.
The way this assertion (ignorance of the truth of "I") is removed could be done in two ways :
One is the Vedanta, that is the earnestness and longing to find out "What IS".
Vedanta proceeds with seeking the 'permanent' unchangeable in the temporary, the 'phenomenal'.
The core principle that could never be refuted nor denied by logic or experience is :
The all phenomenal is transient and lasts not, while the one who is the axis around which the transient keeps revolving is ever so unchangeable and self-sustained, evident.
This self-sustaining principle, personal or impersonal whatsoever, is the consciousness in which perception happens, and not the converse.
This consciousness is not the result of mutual interaction of the elements, on the other hand, the elements owe evidence to this consciousness.
Whatever "IS" is perceived in consciousness.
But again consciousness IS; the unbroken continuity of 'knowledge' of "What IS".
The "IS" and the 'knowing' is indivisible whole.
--
Vedanta however insists upon 'effort' that is meditation upon "What IS" and also upon "What is not", yet appears as something Real in thought.
This effort can take different forms like :
Staying in "I am",
Finding out the ground / substratum (अधिष्ठान) of "I am",
Staying in "What IS",
Finding out the true purport of "I am",
This effort results into stabilizing the mind in "brahmakara Vritti"  / "ब्रह्माकार वृत्ति ".
That is, the mind by means of any or some of the above efforts culminates into the Cosmic-Consciousness (ब्रह्मन्), the totality of being and knowing that is not focused at a center.
This "brahmakara Vritti"  / "ब्रह्माकार वृत्ति " is the experience of the one indivisible Reality, yet in this experience the seed-consciousness "I am" is latent.
The one who sees 'All is one indivisible whole' keeps and secures oneself as an independent separate entity (observer) while ब्रह्मन् to him is yet another entity.
This is nevertheless a notion only and falls on its own, for there could be no cause that could be attributed for this.
Then the experience is translated into the simple and direct (अपरोक्ष) awakening :
"The observer IS the observed".
This awakening is verily the breaking out of the memory-trap.
--
Incidentally, some may come across this without going through the route narrated above.
Or, we can say they have not noted that they discovered the Reality through this route.
For them, there is no path to Reality.
Yet no doubt they are authentic and their word is the evidence.

Locating the place of the memory ....

Where does the memory reside...2
--
The memory is either personal or cosmic.
The cosmic is, -that is pervaded in Cosmos.
The personal is, -that is associated with a person (soul) and one is in touch with it always, though only a speck is available to him which determines and defines his 'world' and himself along-with the 'time' he finds confined within.
So memory is of time-space existence of oneself.
This memory is consciousness endowed with myriad aspects, but again could be in relation with to a person or the Cosmos.
I'm not convinced if the word 'Cosmos' is synonymous with 'ब्रह्म' / 'ब्रह्मन्'...
Though 'ब्रह्म' / 'ब्रह्मन्'... is another name of 'Totality'; -that includes all.
A person at any time is and finds himself in / at only one plane of consciousness while alive or dead.
While alive, one passes through three stages, namely the waking state (when there is perception of
a outside world, and one takes oneself a specific body in that world), the dream state, when one finds oneself in yet another world and the world of his 'waking state' goes to oblivion.
Though after waking up one often remembers that state, one can't remember the world of his waking state during his dream.
Occasionally, one through some practice can remember in dream that he is asleep to the world and this phase is only a temporary feeling, and one belongs in fact to the waking state where his world is comparatively a firm and stable reality.
Then there is a deep dreamless sleep state where there is darkness only.
The 3 states above narrated is the usual experience of all.
This forms the 3 layers of the mind; -the personal mind and the Cosmic mind as well.
The sense of 'I' and 'I am' are again two different modes of perception.
The sense 'I' prevails through out all the three states.
However the sense 'I am' is not so conspicuous during deep dreamless sleep, and one infers one's existence with the help of the memory of that state.
In usual behavioral level while living in this world, it is perfectly o.k. to assume oneself a person, -with a name and form, but it is not the whole truth.
The same consciousness that is manifest and is revealed during the waking state enters the state of dream-level and then of the deep sleep level.
Again the 3 states could be further categorized in terms of 5 sheaths (कोष) . These 5 sheaths are the abode of memory.
The five sheaths are described as:
अन्नमय > body made of food,
प्राणमय > body made of vital forces,
मनोमय > body made of thoughts, feelings, emotions, intellect and inference.
विज्ञानमय > the body made of pure perception (बोधमात्र), without translating the perception into a memory in terms of experience, feeling, emotion, or inference.
and the last is:
The sense of joy / bliss of being only.
respectively.
And could be explained easily in a way everyone can understand.
The memory is the only way and bridge too to connect the individual to the Cosmic.
In our common misunderstanding though we tend to think them 2 aspects of existence,
it is nevertheless a completely wrong notion.
The same 'I' that is 'ब्रह्म' / 'ब्रह्मन्'... / 'Brahman', is realized in the Cosmic Consciousness as "Self", while as 'self' in the individual consciousness.
Let us first find out where this 'I' is located in our individual consciousness, then we can perhaps go ahead and deeper.
During dreamless sleep, one experiences the joy of deep sleep though this is never a sensory experience.
But there again the 'perception' (भान / बोध) of this natural joy / happiness is so prominent, no one can doubt.
This implies in that state of dreamless deep sleep 'I' exist(s) and the perception that it is a state of  'joy' is also there.
This 'perception' is exactly the विज्ञानमय कोष and also the आनंदमय कोष .
For a comparative study of these 5 sheaths one could seek help from :
"माण्डूक्य उपनिषद' / where this whole subject is well explained.
Coming once again to the question :
Where does the memory reside.....
we need to locate a place in this physical body that could be thought of as the exact point.
We have to find out with the help of Gita chapter 5 stanza 27 and chapter 8 stanza 10.
But before that let us try to see how 'I' (अहम्) and 'I am' (अहम् -अस्मि) are in relation to one -another.
The word 'I' signifies 'सत्' , that is 'What IS' irrespective of time-space, because time-space are but manifest form of the 'सत्' , the 'What IS'.
This rhythm of manifestation and withdrawal from the manifestation to potential hidden form of 'सत्' , of the 'What IS' is again relative to person (individual) and the Universal (of his world), So there is a state of manifestation and dissolution for the individual and his relevant world. Again there is another perspective when such an infinity and their world is viewed as a world irrespective of any particular individual.
This Universal world (physical Gross World made of 5 elements) also undergoes through repeated manifestation and dissolution.
So there is the death and reincarnation at the individual level and the Universal level also.
The 'knowledge' of this process is in the seed-form in the Cosmic Consciousness.
That constitutes the "Cosmic Memory".
This "Cosmic memory" has again a terminal connecting the individual with a name and form (body) with the Universal.
As has been said, time-space is but manifest form of the 'सत्' , the 'What IS', we can never say there is / was 'Creation' and 'Destruction' of the existence as such . This is but appearance and disappearance of 'सत्' , the 'What IS', in the individual and the Universal consciousness.
'I'(अहम्) and 'I am' (अहम् -अस्मि) are but two aspects of the same 'सत्' , the 'What IS', where 'I' is ever so pure, unaffected by this Cosmic memory, while 'I am' (अहम् -अस्मि) is the memory / knowledge that forms the upper layer of the manifest.
Thus 'I am' is though the great bridge to transcend the state of individual being (that is the root-cause of sorrow, confusion, misery, ignorance), 'I' is the indestructible (अविनाशी) state of 'I'(अहम्) , where all divisions cease to exist.
The state of 'ब्रह्म' / 'ब्रह्मन् / 'Brahman' too is therefore 'सत्' , the 'What IS', and thereby is the conclusion :
अहम् ब्रह्मास्मि / aham brahmaasmi
that applies to the Self as well as 'ब्रह्मन् / 'Brahman' too.
And this knowledge (memory) is revealed at the individual and the Cosmic level as well.
Yet 'the World' is an intermediate link between the two.
The place of 'I am' in the human body is at the 'आज्ञा चक्र' /  AjnA-chakra (is described vaguely as the point on the forehead between the two eye-brows).
The word आज्ञा / AjnA itself means the simple knowledge (ज्ञा > जानाति > to know, with prefix आ that implies in the right manner) .
All individual memory in the seed form is located at this 'आज्ञा चक्र' /  AjnA-chakra.
In death however the vital breath follows the mind (चित्त / Cittam) and the sense 'I am' leaves the corporeal body through one of the 1001 (or more, according to how they are interpreted)  and the dying person experiences the passage chosen by his last wish, desire etc.
The role of faith is only to let the man choose a path that takes him to 'I am' sense.
Ramana Gita explains the whole process how the place of 'I' in the individual body is on the right side on the chest that is the purport of 'हृदयं', the 'I am' sense basically emanates from there.
This is reflected / manifest in the head as the personal conscious while the sense 'I am' stay seated at the  'आज्ञा चक्र' /  AjnA-chakra.
Now, the reference to Gita :
भ्रुवोः / bhruvoH
Locative, -7th case in Sanskrit vibhakti) ; meaning upon, on, at).
This is the same root, प्रातिपदिक  / crude form of a noun,  that generates another word भ्रूण (embryo).
So, we can understand how the 'I am' sense that is located in the body along-with the memory of the person, after discarding the dead body enters in the form of an embryo in the womb of the mother of the next incarnation he assumes.
--
The reference to Gita is just to establish a link between two consecutive births of a soul / individual.
However the whole process and practice needs elaborate efforts and then one can think of preserving and retaining the memory in the next birth.
This is one way, one can hope to be born in a new body and remembering the past one also.
Again, Just like  'ब्रह्म' / 'ब्रह्मन् / 'Brahman', who could be contacted at 'आज्ञा चक्र' /  AjnA-chakra, one could also meditate upon different 'devata' who are the presiding deities at the various nerve-centers ( चक्र / chakra) in the body.
One attains the particular Loka (Sphere) of that Deity, in case if one remembers him when one, while alive, breaths his last.
--
There are 7 Major Spheres (Urdhva-Loka / ऊर्ध्व लोक), and one can knowingly or unknowingly, wittingly or unwittingly attain any of these.
And again there are such 7 अधोलोक  / adho-Loka (Minor Spheres) (nether-worlds).
Likewise there are 7 मध्यलोक / Middle -Spheres , which form the 'sub-conscious'.

"I know nothing".

"I know nothing".
___________________

She posted her status-update on her Facebook page.
An intelligent observation though, usually people tend to take this as a routine and careless remark only. But as she is my friend on Facebook since long, I took this occasion to suggest to her the deeper implications of this statement.
"One who says :
"I know nothing"
may be or may not be aware of the deeper implicit meaning of this.
But no doubt, it requires and should be seriously and keenly noted by the one who utters this sentence.
One thing can be pointed out that one who says so, though know may know nothing of this world which he / she shares with other things and people, it is also absolutely true at the same time that he / she is aware of his / her own existence. And paying a bit more attention, he / she can be convinced of the truth that this awareness of oneself is basically non-verbal and without words that all worldly knowledge / information consists of.
Let us see what the worldly knowledge is made of.
Is it not only the memory of words and images that mind has learned to create and associate with various experiences one comes across everyday and moment to moment life?
Could we think self-awareness is of the form of this information / knowledge which causes, builds up and is maintained, even preserved as 'memory' in the brain?
Of course, there is also 'memory' in terms of emotions and sentiments associated with the heart, rather than with the brain, that too is a result of 'feelings' translated into and named as good or bad, pleasant, unpleasant or mixed-up.
Yet no doubt the 'self' that is formed out of 'memory' is quite different a phenomenon then the 'Self' that stays silent and is instinctively aware of itself.
This is not an action on the part of 'Self', it is rather the very 'nature' of the 'Self' where this 'knowing' and 'being' are but two aspects of the one and the same indivisible and individual existence.
And this is quite obvious that this 'Self' proclaims and asserts this truth when one says :
"I know nothing."
This exclamation is possible and valid only if one knows oneself.
Usually dealing with the worldly knowledge, we just forget the worldly knowledge is based upon 'one who knows', 'what is known' and the 'object of knowledge'.
While such a tried can never exist in
"awareness of the 'Self'..."
And neither it is needed.
So one falls a pray to the illusion that one can some day have
"Enlightenment"
of the Truth of the 'Self'....
So long as this illusion persists, one moves in a groove of ignorance only.

Phubbing

Phubbing :
--
Phubbing means involved so deep in self-centered activity that one ignores all other things until forced upon by the circumstances.
-Either by compulsion or by need.
Some 20 years ago when computer and mobiles had not yet occupied human mind, we used to indulge in our own mental conditioning, and at the same time we could connect with others through verbal talk. Now that has become less and less. Even when we seem to talk to and converse with others, our own mind skillfully keeps it's defense and we hardly connect with any one. Even in emotional or relationship levels like that in so-called 'love' or amour our mind is focused on this self-defense and man as such is more and more isolated within oneself. This is the essence of 'phubbing'.
In the process one keeps enjoying music, cultural activity, Art, Intellectual discussion , but well secure and enclosed within the wall of self-defense.
Human mind that is the collective consciousness of being a human is thus restricted to 'personal' level. This itself carves out a niche for itself in some ideal, religious belief, even 'spirituality', and other such sweet-sounding words.
When you think you are a great Artist, composer, or scientist, businessman, industrialist, leader (religious or the state) you believe you belong to your ideal and try to present yourself as a 'role-model' for those who admire you.
This self-centered activity is all the harm self could do to itself and the society as a whole.

Boredom and wisdom /

Boredom and wisdom.
--
Boredom is self-desired assertion.
Boredom is the name of a state of the mind when thought finds no more ground further, to step upon. Then the thought (the mind) just returns to sleep or tries to engage in some apparently useful or useless activity.
Because thought can't survive in the absence of a support; that is in vacuum. As assertion, however, boredom is again a thought only. Boredom exists in thought-form and in the event-form. One is verbal assertion, another is a happening.
Boredom always has vacuum for its support.
Boredom is born, survives and prospers in vacuum only.
We can here also see that the addiction to drugs or being workaholic are again two ways thought chooses mindlessly to obliterate itself.
Boredom is never an experience but thought gives this name to that state of the mind and we are led into believing that Boredom is an experience.
You can invite an experience, while you can't invite Boredom.
Wisdom is the awareness of this whole movement of thought.

Art, attention and Meditation

Art, attention and Meditation
--
--
When Art is Meditation,
When Meditation is Art,
When Attention is withdrawn from the world,
And comes upon the self,
The Action becomes Meditation.
And the Attention, -the Action.
The Action becomes the Talent,
And the Talent, -the Yoga.
"Yoga is the perfection in Action"
(-Says Gita.)
Then the extrovert mind,
Turns inwards,
Merges deep into the sub-conscious.
And the Action happens on its own,
Effortlessly.
And at the same time,
Art attains perfection.
When this happens,
The sub-consciousness enters and,
Merges into its source,
-The Consciousness / Awareness pure, pristine, timeless.
The consciousness (the mind) - seed,
Becomes the manifest.
The Expression.
The Artist, the Yogi, the Actor, the devotee,
Becomes One with the Creator,
And One with the Creation as well.
-Limitless, Unbound, Infinite ....

"Truth is a pathless land"

--
